A Castlebar councillor has added her voice to the growing number of calls for an outright ban in schools on fizzy drink vending machines.

A demonstration in solidarity with the people of Gaza and Palestine, is taking place at Market Square, Castlebar, tomorrow (Saturday) at 4 pm.

The chairperson of the Castlebar Municipal District, Cllr Al McDonnell, said that the people wanted the position to have a chain or a symbol of office. He told the July meeting of the municipal district he had been invited to a number of events and the organisers of those events had told him not to attend if he did not have chain or a symbol to show his status.

The curtain finally came down on the local and European election count in the Royal Theatre in Castlebar in the early hours of Thursday after a mammoth almost five days of counting of votes, when Marian Harkin held off the challenge of Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher to win the last seat in the Midlands North West European constituency.

Where did it all go wrong is what the Fine Gael party faithful will be trying to figure out over the next few weeks as they saw their seats in the county town drop from four to two over the weekend. One man who won’t be asking that question is Independent Cllr Michael Kilcoyne who topped the poll with an amazing 2,921 votes, a massive 1,210 first preference votes over the quota of 1,711. From not long after the boxes were opened and spilled across the counting tables in the Royal Theatre in Castlebar early on Saturday morning, there was never any doubt that Kilcoyne was going to top the poll, it was only a matter of by how much. When he was elected on the first count, he was the first councillor in Ireland elected in this year’s local elections, but he had to wait until the early hours of Tuesday morning for the official declaration of election after the recount of the Castlebar papers had been concluded. Advocates for the immigrant community gathered in Castlebar recently to celebrate the Mayo Intercultural Action Oral History Project. The project, which was supported by South West Mayo Development Company, saw immigrants from different countries come together to record audio accounts of their lives and migration to county Mayo. Project participants included people from as far afield as Latvia, Poland, Russia, Nigeria, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Burma/Myanmar.

Following similar proposals in Ballina and then Westport, Castlebar is to look to obtain Purple Flag status. Sinn Fein councillor Therese Ruane was to propose a motion calling for the town to apply for Purple Flag status at last night’s meeting of Castlebar Town Council (Thursday, February 20).

The public are being unnecessarily medicated with fluoride against their will, according to a local councillor.

The marked gender imbalance on Mayo County Council looks unlikely to be addressed in a significant way in the upcoming Local Elections on May 23.
